By David C. Johnston, The Globe and MailThe most expensive terraria on Melbourne’s east coast is the one on the corner of Southbank and Westbank streets, where a sign says it’s “premium and best for the most money.”
The terrarium is the largest in Melbourne and is the first in the city to feature an enclosed courtyard with a glass canopy, and it’s selling for more than $1.4 million.
It was built in 2014 and is now being used as a garden.
It’s also one of the few places where people can get a tour, for an affordable price, according to a brochure on the terrarium.
“It’s one of only a few terrariums in the world with the windows open,” said Kristin MacKenzie, a manager with the city’s tourism department.
“You can see the flowers.”
MacKenzie said the terraria has been available since last November and had been in demand since then.
It has sold for $2,500 in one day, she said, and $3,500 per square foot.
The terrarium will stay open for another month, and if you’re not looking to live on a high floor, you can buy it for less.
But the terrace is not the only property on the block with high prices.
In the city centre, the Terrace Hotel is one of five properties on the same block with an average asking price of $2.2 million, and the cheapest on the street is the $1 million terrace on the north side of the street.
“We’re trying to keep the price down and not to make it too expensive for people to live here,” said MacKenneth, who is also a city planner.
She said the city would not be allowing it to be used for anything other than a garden, and there’s not much space in the room for it.
The hotel is the only one in the Melbourne area that is not a private club.
“If people want to live in our terrace, they can live in any terrace they want to.
We’ve had a lot of inquiries from people wanting to rent our terraces.”
MacKenys terrarium and other terraces in the same neighbourhood have been selling for the same price.
She’s been using them as a community garden for about six months now.
“The whole point of the terraces is to give people a place to live,” MacKKenys said.
“They are a place for people who want to get away from the city and just go on a walk.”
“The idea is to provide a space for people.”
She said people who live on the west side of Melbourne and have access to a courtyard could also use them as living spaces.
MacKennys terraria is the third in the block and has been used for about three years.
She and her husband, John, bought it in 2012, but it hasn’t been used in a year.
The building’s owner, The Carriage House Group, is not commenting.
MacKKennys said the price of living in the area has increased as people have moved to other parts of the city, and as the city has grown.
“It’s been very tough,” she said.
She sees the new developments as an opportunity for people.
“People don’t want to be in the car park and it can be very hard to get a space,” she added.
She says her husband is keen to keep terrarium in the neighbourhood, and he plans to use the space for other things in the future.
“He’s planning on having a little garden in there, maybe a few trees,” she joked.
