In the past few years, the dragon fruit has been blamed for killing thousands of humans and thousands of wild animals in the US.
While most of the blame lies on the dragon, the US government has now been investigating the deadly taste for years.
The government is now trying to pinpoint exactly what causes the fruit to taste so horrible, and scientists are hoping they’ll find out how to make the fruit harmless again.
Dr. John B. Kaptchuk, a professor of toxicology at Yale University and the lead researcher on the new study, told CNN that the dragon fruits have been found in the wild in the southern US.
“They’re basically the only kind of fruit we know of that tastes like a poisonous dragon fruit, which we don’t know why it’s toxic,” he said.
“It’s not the kind of thing that we normally eat, but it’s one of the more common kinds of fruit that people eat, and they’ve been eating it for centuries.”
Kaptch said that the new results don’t necessarily mean that the fruit tastes bad, but they do suggest that a new method to reduce the toxin would help it become harmless again, which would be great news for those of us who have eaten the fruit.
He also said that he hopes the new research will help people avoid the deadly fruit again.
“I don’t want to scare anyone, but I don’t think it’s a very good idea to eat this kind of dragon fruit in the future,” he told CNN.
“And I hope that it’s safe to eat again.”
